What are Weck Jars made of?
Preserving jars from the WECK brand are made of soda-lime glass. The jars consist of approximately 70% quartz sand, 10% lime, 13% soda, small amounts of dolomite, which makes the glass less sensitive to temperature fluctuations, feldspar, which makes it more resistant, and sodium sulphate, which is supposed to prevent the formation of bubbles.
Another crucial ingredient is added: recycled glass, which today even replaces sand as the main component in terms of quantity. Soda-lime glass accounts for nearly 90% of all glass produced worldwide.
Why do we can food?
Quite simply: to preserve food. In summer, fruit and vegetables are readily available, they may even grow in your own garden. By preserving them, we can also enjoy them in the cold months. Plus, preserving is fun and our jars make a great gift filled with your own creations.
Why not use the freezer?
Canned foods usually have a longer shelve life than frozen foods.
You can use what has been canned straight away – frozen food must first be thawed and prepared.
Freezer space can be limited and will require more energy compared to a product on the shelf.
What happens during the canning process?
The micro-organisms contained in the food and the air (fermentation germs, bacteria, mold spores, etc.) are killed during the heating process. At the same time, an overpressure is created. This pressure pushes hot air and steam between the rubber ring and the edge of the glass. This negative pressure within the jar and the outside air pressure create a vacuum upon cooling. When correctly done, the lid will sit firmly on the ring and glass - even after you remove the metal preserving clamps.
Can I use my rubber rings more than once after canning?
It is recommended to use the rubber rings only for one canning process. The durability of the rubber depends on various factors such as:
- how much heat has the rubber been exposed to?
- what products have been in touch with it?
Shipping
Do you offer free shipping?
We offer our products at the most competitive pricing and do not reflect shipping costs as a part of the product price. We do how ever offer highly discounted shipping rates which start from $15 for shipments within British Columbia/Alberta and $25 for shipments to Ontario. All other provinces are subject to our carrier rates. We do work with all major carriers such as UPS, FedEx, Purolator, Canada Post etc.
When does my order ship?
Products which are in stock at our warehouse are usually ready to be send within 24 hours. Once your order has shipped a confirmation with the relevant tracking link will be provided. For any questions regarding your order, please reach out to shipping@weckjars.ca
How do you ensure that my product arrives undamaged?
We can not ensure this since we use a third party carrier to deliver to you. We do however make sure that all glass products are packed in a box with sufficient separation between jars and an additional outside box which is filled with packing peanuts, which are made of degradable corn starch. The outside box will also have sufficient labeling to indicate the fragile nature of the product.
What if my products are damaged during transport?
If you receive a damaged product, please contact us at help@weckjars.ca within 5 business days of receiving your order. Please include a picture of the damaged item in your email. If the product is eligible for a refund, we will process the appropriate refund to your method of payment. Please note that we are not able to ship replacements.
How do I return my product if I don’t like it?
Products purchased from us are eligible for returns up to 30 days from the day the order has been delivered. The product needs to be returned in a sellable condition at the expense of the customer. Once the product has been received and proofed eligible, a refund will be issued to the method of payment used for the purchase. Please allow up to 10 business days for the refund to appear on your statement.
